Opportunity Description
The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Pathogen Genomics under the Global Health Security department, Professor Ssewankambo Global Health Security Training Program in Africa. The role focuses on strengthening global health security through pathogen genomics and One Health approaches, integrating genomics applications with business development, scientific documentation, programme implementation, research and multidisciplinary collaboration. Key responsibilities include contributing to funding proposals and grant applications; preparing manuscripts, technical reports, policy briefs and protocols; supporting presentation of research findings; implementing Global Health Security initiatives including data analysis, modelling, stakeholder engagement and capacity building; conducting independent and collaborative studies on epidemic-prone pathogens and genomic data; and working with clinicians, epidemiologists and policymakers to translate computational insights into actionable public-health strategies. Requirements
PhD in Pathogen Genomics, Immunology, Pathology, Computational Biology, Medicine, Advanced Microbiology, Veterinary Medicine, Molecular Biology or a related field, completed within the last 2 years or soon to be completed. Candidates who have submitted and are awaiting thesis defence are eligible. Strong foundation in epidemics-related genomics, with interest or experience in One Health applications. Familiarity with filoviruses and large-scale genomic datasets such as PathogenWatch is essential. Track record of scientific output preferred. Proficiency in genomic data tools, analysis software and scripting languages such as Python, R and Bash. Excellent scientific writing and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in applied settings.
